Emotional tears themselves carry stress hormones like cortisol out of the body, which researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz point to as one reason crying can genuinely offload stress rather than just express it.
Your breathing gets in on it too. Hard crying disrupts your normal breathing pattern enough to reduce oxygen flow to the brain, which produces drowsiness. Add the endorphins and oxytocin released along the way and you get that heavy-limbed, could-sleep-for-a-year sensation. Your body isn't malfunctioning. It's sedating you on purpose.
The brakes take a few minutes to arrive
Here's the part almost nobody explains, and it's the part that makes the whole experience less confusing.
A 2019 study described in Psychology Today found that the onset of crying comes with increased sympathetic activity (the revved-up, agitated feeling), while the resolution of crying comes with increased parasympathetic activity. Crucially, the calming parasympathetic effects outlasted the arousing ones by a couple of minutes. Your body doesn't just return to baseline. It overshoots into recovery.
That's why the relief feels delayed. Researchers have found that crying activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps you self-soothe, but as Healthline notes, the benefits aren't immediate. Some tracking of the shift suggests it starts around the five-minute mark and settles in over ten to fifteen, as blood pressure dips and breathing slows. This also resolves a puzzle that confused crying researchers for years. In lab studies, people often report feeling worse immediately after crying, while surveys of people remembering their cries insist crying helps. Jonathan Rottenberg, Lauren Bylsma, and Ad Vingerhoets laid out this contradiction in a 2008 review: lab data show crying increases distress and autonomic arousal in the moment, even as people swear by it in retrospect. A later study by Gračanin, Vingerhoets, and colleagues found the reconciliation: after the initial dip, mood doesn't just recover over time — it eventually climbs above where it started. The cry is an investment. The exhaustion is the cost, paid up front. The return arrives later.
There's even an evolutionary reading of the tiredness itself. One theory holds that sadness is physically draining precisely to force us to retreat and rest after a loss. Ancient losses demanded recovery time. Your body still hands you the prescription, even when the loss was a text message.
When the tiredness comes without the relief
One honest caveat, because the "good cry" gets oversold. Not every cry pays out. In one large survey Vingerhoets discussed with the APA, only about 30% of people reported improved mood after crying; around 60% felt no change and a small slice felt worse. And Rottenberg and Bylsma's work at the University of South Florida found that people who struggle to identify what they're feeling tend to feel worse after crying, not better. Context matters enormously: whether you felt safe, whether the cry connected to anything you could actually name.
That last part is the piece I keep coming back to. The exhaustion is automatic; the relief is not. The cries that leave you drained and somehow lighter tend to be the ones where you understood, even roughly, what the tears were about. The cries that just leave you hollowed out are often the ones that arrived unlabeled, out of nowhere, about everything and nothing.
Which is a decent argument for putting words to it while it's still close. Not a five-paragraph essay.
