Your hand was in your pocket before you'd decided to move it. You felt the buzz, you'd swear to it, pulled the phone out, tilted the screen toward your face. Nothing. No banner, no badge, no missed anything. You slid it back with the small private embarrassment of waving at someone who was waving at the person behind you.
If that's ever happened to you, here's the part nobody tells you: you were, technically, hallucinating. A very small hallucination, and a very ordinary one, but the word is medically accurate. Researchers call it phantom vibration syndrome, and it's classed as a mild tactile hallucination: your body perceived a physical sensation that no physical event produced.
And you are in enormous company. Depending on which study you read, somewhere between 60 and 90 percent of phone users report feeling a phone vibrate when it didn't. The buzz-that-wasn't is less a glitch than a standard feature of the modern nervous system. Almost everyone's leg is lying to them.
The question worth sitting with isn't whether it happens. It's why your brain would bother making it up.
your brain is not a camera
We like to imagine perception as recording equipment. Light comes in, sound comes in, the brain plays it back faithfully. It doesn't work that way. Perception is closer to guessing: the brain runs predictions about what's probably out there, checks them against incoming noise, and when the noise is ambiguous, the prediction wins. Psychologists describe the phantom buzz as a kind of hypothesis-guided search: your brain expects a notification, goes looking for evidence of one, and fills in the sensory gap with the thing it anticipated.
The raw material is always there. A muscle twitch in your thigh. Denim shifting as you walk. The phone itself settling half a centimeter in your pocket. Ordinarily your brain files this stuff under "nothing." But once it's been trained by thousands of real buzzes, each one attached to a small jolt of someone wants you, it starts reading that ordinary body noise as an alert. You taught it the pattern. It's just running the pattern back, a little too eagerly.
The cleanest evidence comes from people whose jobs punish a missed message. A study of medical interns published in PLOS One followed young doctors through internship, a year of being perpetually on call, and found phantom vibrations and phantom ringing strikingly common, made worse by stress. The researchers were careful to say this isn't pathology. It's normal brain mechanisms at work: expectancy plus vigilance. A second study of medical interns found the same thing from a different angle: the phantoms tracked with how much people used their phones and how stressed they felt.
In other words, the buzz is dose-dependent. The more you're braced for contact, the more contact your brain invents.
And it's not new, which I find weirdly comforting. Before smartphones there were pagers, and according to a history of the phenomenon in the Deccan Chronicle, a Dilbert strip was already joking about "phantom-pager syndrome" in 1996. Researchers described it as a tactile hallucination in 2003, and in 2007 the psychologist David Laramie gave it the name it probably deserves: ringxiety. The hardware keeps changing. The ache underneath it doesn't. We've been half-waiting to be reached for as long as we've had things that could reach us.
There's a tidy framework for this, if you want one. Signal detection theory says every perceiving creature has to set a threshold: how strong does a sensation need to be before I treat it as real? Set the bar high and you miss things. Set it low and you get false alarms. An always-on life quietly drags that threshold down, because missing a message feels costlier than checking an empty screen. Your brain did the math and decided false alarms were the cheaper error.
It's not wrong, exactly. It's just optimizing for a life where you're never fully off duty.

Here's where I'll take a side: I don't think the phantom buzz is a problem to fix. When Michelle Drouin and her colleagues surveyed undergraduates for a 2012 study in Computers in Human Behavior, phantom vibrations turned out to be a common, mostly mundane part of student life, not a crisis. Nobody needs to panic about a twitchy thigh.
But I do think it's a report. A one-line memo from your nervous system, delivered several times a week, that reads: still waiting.
Waiting for what is the interesting part. Sometimes it's obvious. A text back from someone specific, a reply to the risky message, news from the interview. Sometimes it's vaguer and a little harder to look at: not any particular message, just the ambient hope of being wanted, pinged, chosen. The phantom buzz is one of the only places that hope becomes physical. You can't see your own attention, but you can feel your leg jump.
No screen-time dashboard will tell you what you were braced for. You have to actually ask yourself, which is awkward, because the honest answer often arrives in a full sentence you'd never bother typing. I've found the fastest route there is saying it out loud. That's a big part of why we built Joice. There it is, in the transcript. The thing your pocket already knew.
Here's a small challenge, then. Next time your leg buzzes and the screen is empty, don't just pocket the phone and move on. Take the five seconds. Ask what you were hoping it was. Name it, even silently, even badly.
Or try the stranger experiment: leave the phone in another room for an evening and notice, an hour in, that your leg buzzes anyway. That little ghost tremor against nothing. The phone isn't even there, and some part of you is still standing at the door.
The waiting, it turns out, outlives the phone. Worth knowing who it's for.
